ROSEWOOD 26 | HETEROSEXUAL | ALGEBRA TEACHER | LOCAL | CHRIS HEMSWORTH "... [Beep!] Hey, honey, I know you're probably on your way home from work, but could you pick up some diapers on the way home? I totally spaced them at the store yesterday... [rustling, dial tone]..." Much like any fresh parents, Kimberly and Gregory Rosewood experienced an adventure in the first year or so of parenthood. Nevertheless, Keith was exactly the child they had talked about since their engagement. He was a sweet young baby with a headful of hair and blue, blue eyes. Keith was a rather rambunctious toddler, very well living up to the notorious “Terrible Two’s” phase in life. Everyone adored Keith. His parents guided him on the paths they saw fit with gentle pushes and prods, all of which he seemed to adapt to just fine. "... [Beep!] Yeah? Mom, shit, why aren't you answering your phone? It's Kim. She's in labor and... [catches breath]... she'd really appreciate it if you actually showed up this time. [inaudible conversation] We're at the Dominican on Soquel Drive, okay? Bye..." Keith was nearly four years old when his sister was born. Kimberly and Gregory had decided that their son needed another companion, and Kim had always dreamed of signing up her daughter for pageants and dance classes. Upon her birth, she and Keith was basically connected at the hip. Keith loved holding his newborn baby sister. He loved helping Kim feed her with a bottle. Today his connection with Dani is just as great—if not more—as it was the day she came home from the hospital. Keith would certainly take a bullet for her. "... Hello? Coach Wagner? Yeah, this is Kim Rosewood, Keith's mom. I just wanted to call and let you know... Dani, don't do that, honey... Sorry. I just wanted to call and let you know that... Dani! Keith, knock it off! ... We're going to be a little late to practice, but Keith will be there. So sorry for the inconvenience. Mkay? Bye, bye now..." While Dani did pageants, Gregory made sure to steer Keith into a sporting career. Football was their main focus, really. Gregory had high hopes that Keith would end up at USC. Kim supported Keith’s athleticism, too. They always attended all of his games, and Gregory was always encouraging him to do better. Their sharp criticisms didn’t seem too controlling at the time. Keith enjoyed playing ball, and he saw his parent’s support as nothing more than an unending devotion to him and his success. In high school he later became a three-season athlete as well as a participant in ROTC. He played football in the fall, wrestling in the winter, and baseball in the spring. Obviously, his strength was the first. "… [muffled laughter] Keith, you dumbfuck. Don’t forget about Lauren’s party tonight. It’s going to be sick. Alright? Logan and I will come by your house around eight, if you want a ride…" There were two sides of Keith—the one around his parents and the one around his friends. Generally Keith was a fun-loving boy all-around, but he had quite a wild side once the goody-goody layer was peeled back a little. He was constantly frequenting parties, sometimes getting so drunk he had to stay over at a nearby friend’s house to save his hide. Nevertheless, his studies and sports always came first. Keith didn’t care if it made him “uncool” to skip out on a party to do a little studying. In fact, some of his friends admired him for it. He could have the best of both worlds in moderation. Kim and Gregory’s fervor for their only son had far from diminished. They still supported everything he did, always gloating they had the most perfect son on the planet. It was no wonder why Keith’s ego was at times overinflated. He had fans no matter where he went. “… Hey, man. I don't really know how to tell you this, so I'm just going to come out and say it. I'm ninety-nine percent sure I just saw Brooke kissing another guy...” Unfortunately, his faith in humanity often left him scarred. Brooke had always been a friend to Keith. She was incredibly attractive and had a personality that he found himself drawn to. Senior year Keith finally mustered to ask her on a date. Yes, they became a couple, and yes, Keith had decided he couldn’t have his life any better. He wasn’t in love with her then. Not yet. Hearing from one of his good friends he’d seen Brooke making time with some other guy broke his heart, however. Keith was as loyal as a golden retriever. How could she do this to him? Angry, Keith broke things off with her and went on to other girls. All the while he couldn’t seem to shake how much he liked Brooke, no matter who he dated. Brooke had really left her mark. “… Hi, Keith, dear. It’s your grandma. I just wanted to say I’m so sorry I can’t make it to your graduation. I just wanted to call and tell you that I love you, miss you, and your grandpa would be so proud of you. I sent some graduation money in the mail a few days ago, so you should be getting it soon, okay? Give your sister a hug for me, okay? Bye, sweetheart…” Among the few, his grandmother was also another offender in terms of her loyalty to Keith. From missing his birth to skipping out on his State football game, she was never there. She was always there for Dani, but she always “forgot” to make room in her calendar for the milestones in Keith’s life. Hearing she wasn’t coming to his college graduation didn’t faze him one bit. He’d be more shocked if she did decide to show up. In the end, Keith decided not to attend the University of Southern California. Keith knew right away that he wanted to teach high school level students algebra. Math just came easy to him, so he enrolled in a program and graduated. Gregory was displeased to find Keith chose another school. Keith denies it, but he had chosen the school he had partly because Brooke was going to be there. Despite her infidelity, Keith thought the world of her. Their college years gave him a chance to properly fall in love with her. “… Keith, pick up your goddamn phone… [heavy sigh]… Your mother and I are worried sick about you, son. We know you’re angry. Let’s just talk this through, alright? Come home…” Keith had always known Gregory and Kim were controlling, yet he never understood the extent they were willing to go to see their kids live the dreams they couldn’t. Keith had no idea they hit Dani whenever she wronged them. Kim and Greg had never laid a single finger on him before. At first Keith had a hard time believing the facts. Then he found out his parents had been hitting Dani for years. To put a long story short, Keith was pissed. He completely lost it. There were many verbal fights that broke out between his parents and him. Finally, Keith made the executive decision to move he, Brooke, and Dani somewhere far away from Santa Cruz, California. Brunswick, Maine seemed fitting. Keith had planning on enrolling in the army to serve his country and there was a basic training camp not too far from there. His parents tried to reason with him, tried to apologize. Keith wouldn’t have it, and he refuses to speak to them to this day. “… Hi, Keith. This is Carmen from Trisha's. I was just calling you to say we had a cancellation, so you're more than welcome to come on the eighth for your tuxedo fitting if that works for you. Let me know. Again, this was Carmen from Trisha's. The number is 729-4696, 729-4696…” Maine turned out to be a great place. Keith really grew to love the slow pace now that he had matured into a respectable adult. His time before being deployed was shrinking fast, so he made another impulsive decision. He wanted to marry Brooke. On their anniversary as a couple, Keith proposed to her and, thankfully, she said yes. The wedding plans were rather rushed, but overall, Keith was pleased with the turnout. The reception was small. A local priest married them with the attendance of his sister, select family members, and a few of their newest friends from Maine. The ceremony was by no means luxurious. The reception was somewhat lacking. None of the sentimental “filler” really mattered at the time, at least, not to Keith. All he knew was he was so in love with his wife, and for him, that was enough. Still, he wonders if Brooke was as pleased with their big day as he was. Deep down, he knows she deserved something more lavish, so he tries to make up for his faults by showing her extra reminders of his love for her. Bouquets of flowers, massaging her shoulders, and taking her out on romantic dates are just a few examples. “… Hey, babe. I know it's getting late over there, and you're probably sleeping... [pauses]... I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to call you like I promised, but I'll try again in the morning. I love you, baby. Sweet dreams...” Keith always strove to find a sense of purpose. His parents seemed to have his entire life planned for him, and after hearing about Dani’s abuse, he felt obligated to do something beyond their blueprint for him. Maybe he was selfish in doing some. Maybe it was rash. Either way, participating in ROTC during high school gave him a basis of knowledge needed to join the ranks of the US Army. Moving to Maine, he settled everything on the home front before going off to basic training. No matter what, he always tried to make Brooke and Dani comfortable before deployment. Unlike other soldiers, Keith didn’t have too many traumatic experiences to scar him. His unit was sent to Iraq to keep the peace among its citizens. They were practically heroes. Serving in the military also helped him become an even better man. In some ways, though, his service has also hurt the ones he loves. Four years in the military are required, two extra being a reserved draft. Each time Keith thinks he’s home for good, he somehow is sent back. “… Keith! Hey... Madi, try to keep the paint off your face... Uh, just wanted to say hello and we miss you! Madi is painting you a picture as we speak! Or, well, painting my table mostly. Anyway, love you…” Madilyn Rosewood is Keith’s proudest accomplishment. Nicknamed Madi, the cute munchkin is nearly a year old. Keith and Brooke decided to try conceiving once Keith’s four-year duty was finished. He had no idea that he’d be sent back, so learning Brooke was pregnant with their first child was one of the greatest moments in his life. About halfway through Brooke’s pregnancy, Keith was deployed to Egypt for another six months. He missed the birth of his child. He missed the first few months of her life. The months following Madi’s birth were the hardest for Keith because he knew he had a duty to his family now. When the news spread that his unit was needed for another tour practically broke his heart. Like the rest of his men, he re-enlisted, all the while missing his family. All the while conflicted about his place. “… Hey, babe. Just wanted to let you know I'm about to board my flight. I'm so excited to see you and Madi. I'll call you when I touch down in Portland...” After a year of unexpected military duty, Keith is ready to settle down in Brunswick with his family. He had a year left on the draft, but recent military movements gives him hope that he’ll be able to stay at home for good. There is so much Keith feels obligated to catch up with. After all, the past five years haven’t been kind to him or his family. He hopes to build his life with Brooke to be one that lasts forever. He hopes to spend as much time as he can making up his lost time with Madi, a child he has only met a few times in her life, a child he should have tucked in every single night.
