RAINER TWENTY | HETEROSEXUAL | STUDENT/INTERN | COLLEGE | CLARA ALONSO THE FIVE LIES 1) her family is completely happy, the pictures, the stories, all of them are false and that they are not broken. 2) chiles is a heartbreaker. she lets guys get into her pants, wiggles her way into their heart and then dumps them as things begin to get serious. 3) chiles is studying to be a journalist, like her mother as she admires her mother to a great extent. 4) she slept with a teacher back in high school to guarantee her the best mark possible, (when the rumors began) 5) chiles was born in germany. THE RUMORS CURRENTLY GOING AROUND 1) chiles managed to drink an entire bottle of tequila by herself and had a threesome with a teaching assistant and professor. 2) she is currently thinking of going into prostitution as that seems to be what she is best at 3) her grades are completely fabricated, as no one ever sees her with a book or even focusing on her studies 4) her exotic beauty is completely fake 5) she has five boyfriends right now. 6) she is addicted to ecstasy after one of her boytoys gave it to her at a party, and could be sleeping with her dealer ONE TRUTH they are all lies CORRECTING THE LIES 1) HER FAMILY IS NOT BROKEN: “this would be a lie. my family is completely broken. my brother is an alcoholic, my father spends more time with the mistress than with his own family though he says ‘business trip’ way too often for my sleeping pill addicted mother not to know. and me? i have my own issues but people ask me how my family is and tell them they are fine. why? because these are not my problems, in my mind, they are fine, they are being who they are and though that is detrimental to their health—it’s their life. i tried to reason with them but they deny it, all of them, so now i do too. family trait I guess.” 2) CHILES IS A HEARTBREAKER: “…really? no. that’s not true because i’ve never given my heart to anyone and if i still have mine, how can i have another’s? there is a difference between guys getting and guys trying, they try and try and in the end, they fail. they tell people what they wanted to happen, they say it like it did, why? because i don’t stop it. campus slut could very well be my title at this point. but no, i do not weasel my way in, in actuality, i’m very independent, i like to keep my stuff to me and let them live their life, if they want to come closer, they can, if not, that’s okay too. relationships just never seem to form, but rumors apparently do” 3) CHILES IS STUDYING TO BE A JOURNALIST: “that much would be half true. i always had a knack for writing but now, my muse is vanishing rather quickly, not sure if i need inspiration or maybe a new topic to write about. i write for the paper, under a penname, only my editor knows it’s me and even then, he hits on me like crazy. for being able to write in a different identity, he’s allowed to talk about stuff we “did” to his friends—he’s gained some popularity since.” 3B) CHILES IS DOING SO BECAUSE SHE ADMIRES HER MOTHER: “not even close. used to, truthfully. i had nothing but respect for my mother, she was a goddess to me but high school was my eye opener. pills made her angelic, calm, sweet and the more pills she took, the more mellowed out and forgetful she became. forgetting recitals, soccer games, my own graduation from high school…so no, very little admiration. i write mostly because of what i can’t verbally say…” 4) SHE SLEPT WITH A TEACHER IN HS FOR GRADES: “this is just too cliché that it makes me sick. no, i earned my grades but high school was where the rumors started and i guess they travelled from …there to here. not really sure how, think my ex-boyfriend knows someone here, he started them back in England in grade 10. and then, i moved here , well a little out of here but it was a private boarding school. it seemed like a cool thing to do at the time, sleep with someone, but…i freaked when the moment came. he told them we did all this …stuff, and i was too shocked to deny it, not good with news like that, i get quiet…hate surprises, hate lying but it’s just become natural to me. but after that rumors began, others did too and then this one appeared, not sure which teacher actually, maybe all of them in everyone’s mind. all my males ones at least.” 5) CHILES WAS BORN IN GERMANY: “no, England. where the hell did they get Germany from? I don’t even have a bloody german accent..idiots. oh i know where this one came from…guess telling people my grandparents survived a horrible genocide inacted by the germans meant i was one of them. bloody fantastic..” finding out the family secrets: “chiles, go get your brother or we are going to be late..”, her heels clicked against the granite flooring as the girl made her way up the steps in a floor length dress, cursing her brother for not being ready on time and in turn, making her mother fetch him. ”blake.”, giving his door a quick pound of her fist but got no answer. she reached for the knob and found the door locked, ”you bastard, open up!”, not far off from calling him by the term which he was. blake was older by three years, their parents marriage had stopped at one point and then started again and during that small split, a baby was born. bugger off! called a voice that caused her eyes to narrow, giving the door another pounding with her first continuously, annoyingly until it was finally pulled open and her brother, not dressed, was revealed. the smell of scotch poured off him in waves as he looked at his sister with his head tilted as though the weight was too much, ”blake, bloody hell, we need to high tail it, come on!’, pushing him back and into his room. a giggle was heard and chiles head tipped back as she turned to the closet to see blonde hair, ”cassandra, go home.” she ordered the girl and then turned around to face her brother who was swaying. chiles, never having been drunk but experienced a moment of tipsiness during the last event when she mistook the sparkling water for champagne, was able to read the signs easily. ”you’re sloshed!” she accused him, even pointing a finger with a shake of her head, ”again!”, adding that for dramatic effect. the brother giggled, giving her a nod and then beckoning his girlfriend to his side. ”you have a serious problem blake, this is the third time this week, and it’s blooming Tuesday!’. turning to walk out the door, she sighed and looked down at the floor with her hand on the knob, ”i’ll tell mom and dad something…”, shutting the door behind her as she walked out into the foyer and looked down from the balcony, ”blake is sick.”, the lie rolling off her tongue with ease. yet another one to add to the list, the numbers were very much adding up for the sixteen year old girl, ”well we have to leave him, come along chiles..” said her mother and it took a deep breath to compose herself but she did, lying to herself (adding it to the list) once again that everything was going to be okay. ”mom, i’m going out tonight, can i borrow one of your earrings?” asked the girl, mustering up the sweetest tone that she possible in order to persuade her mother. a nod was given as the answer as the older woman leaned over the marble kitchen counter top with a paper under her arms, browsing through the leisure section. it was something that two woman shared, the paper, each morning as they both had a love for journalism and chiles planned on becoming one herself, just like her mother. ”really!? oh thank you mom!”, wrapping her arms around her mother in an awkward hug that was given a pat to her arm in return before chiles rushed up the stairs. her friends and her were going out to a party, but her mother believed they were going to be a movie—another white lie. the girl reached the master bedroom and poked her head in, ”dad?” she called out but heard the water running and assumed he was in the shower. moving into the room, the teenager’s eyes lingered on the box that sitting on a large dresser. she did not want anything too fancy, just something classy to go with the dress that she had for the night, which would also be the night where this entire lying game began. ”bingo..” she mumbled, sneaking over the box and lifting the lid. the girl had been sifting through the jewelry for only a moment before attempting to lift the box off the dresser to get a better look at it. for such a big box, it was had very little jewelry in it. the box slipped out of her hands as soon as it was no longer being supported by the dresser and tumbled to the ground. she quickly bent down and checked for damage but something caught her eye, a loose board in the floor. her eyebrow raised, abandoning the box and moving over to the floorboard, pulling it up to notice small pill bottles. reaching for one, she found it empty and with words on the side that the girl knew nothing about. there were at least ten bottles, empty, half empty and completely full of white pills. blinking, she tucked one of the bottles away and with the sound of footsteps, the girl quickly shoved the floor board back into place, ”what are you doing chiles!?”, said a masculine voice. the girl turned around to face her father’s wet form, covered only by a towel and she quickly looked away, ”nothing. just getting earrings..” which was the old intention but now, it was a lie. the girl quickly plucked the first pair that she found and returned the dropped box onto the dresser with a new found strength from the desire to be free of her father’s gaze. it was harsh, as always, judgmental but there was always love lingering. he kissed the top of her head as she passed by him, ”love you.”, not a lie. ”love you too, now i got to get ready to catch a plane.”, lie. chiles has yet to learn of her father’s affair with a woman, even the fact that he has another family that he goes to visit but she feels something is up but her family life is already full of drama that she does not want to stake another problem and will just stick to suspicion rather than seeking out the truth. how it started: ben…no…”, delicate manicured fingers pushed at the aggressive boy’s chest while in a room, hidden away from the rest of the guests. ”chiles…we are fifiteen, it’s fine..”, but she gave his chest another push as he made another pass at getting his lips attached to her neck. he knew her sweet spot and thought if he could get a hold of it, suck and bite on the tender skin that her mind and mood would transition to be more willing for what he had planned. with her parents only a floor below her, chiles did not feel comfortable with the idea altogether and finally stood up, removing herself from the situation. she was starting to button her blouse back up, ”come on baby..”, he cooed to her, loving and soft with an undertone but chiles was adamant about getting back to her mother and father, and watching her brother. ”ben..sorry but no…just understand. let’s go back, our parents must be going mental..”, as they had been gone for a little over an hour. the make out, the soft sensual kisses, slowly transitioned into more, making her both uncomfortable and confused. she had kissed ben, he was her boyfriend after all but she was the guest of honor and was torn between making her way back down to the party and satisfying her boyfriend. it was not her parent’s that won, but the nerves that bubbled up and alerted chiles that she was not ready for this. ”another time ben, promise..”, lie, strolling out the door, while she readjusted her shirt and skirt, rushing a hand through her hair and made her way down the steps to join her friends, family and the people there to celebrate herself and her polo accomplishment. heels clacked on the ground as a hoard of her friends, family ones that she was obligated to be friendly too and eventually found common ground with, rushed up to her. she was forced back under the stairs and eyes burned into her as she struggled for only a moment before relaxing, knowing her friends would not acutally harm her. the way they were looking at her was intense, stares that she could not avoid, ”what!?”, she finally shouted before all her friends shushed her when the sound echoed and carried. ”how was it?” asked one of her friends, bringing chiles brows to furrow, ”uh…”, confusion before the girl shrugged, ”not terrible?” and then giggles erupted. truths came from her friends mouth about their boyfriends and first times and her eyes started to widen as she realized that ben had sent out messages, or some kind of alert to say that they had slept together and she, in a moment of confusion, undeniable lost her rumor virginity. how it continued: her mother once told her that pretty girls don’t get anywhere based on looks. after her ‘virginity’ was given up to ben, never stopping or even attempting to put a stop to the rumors as the attention that she was getting had turned into a positive light. she broke up with ben though, and that she took complete credit for and did not allow him to twist her words around to make herself or himself a martyr. rumors escalated though, continuously and the only reason that they stopped was when chiles moved along with her family at the age of sixteen. history repeated itself though as she found herself a seemingly nice guy to hang out with, the crush growing and with her almond eyes and exotic look, it was not hard for her to get that friendship to be more. at sixteen, she thought that she was ready for it. it was a whole new book, a whole new place and though her family and home life was hell, she had a solid social life to lean back on. it was a fantasy world but so was the idea that she could sleep with a guy before she was truly ready for it. love never seemed real to her, never believing that it was going to happen because the rainer’s seemed to possess horrible luck when it came to that thing. her boyfriend was more understanding than her ex-boyfriend, ben, but it did not stop him from locker room talking. the new girl sleeping with the football player, not star but not a benchwarmer either. she joined cheerleadering and debate, climbed the rungs of popularity but it was all built on a lie. she helped to build people up with her, letting them say what they wanted for the exchange that being associated with her was a done deal for popularity. she got her spotlight and they got their fifteen minutes of fame. she was so built up that even if someone came forward with the truth, it would never be believed. not leaving Brunswick after high school, chiles continues to compete in polo competitions but her reputation as a ‘slut’ is solid and though she can get herself into sticky situations, she has the skills to get herself out as well.
