JUNIPER 22 | STRAIGHT | RADIO DJ | COLLEGE STUDENT | TAYLOR SWIFT bubbly / smiling / determined / stubborn / romantic / musical / hopeful / lonely / creative / private / adopted / dreamer / analiese kyla. ONE YEAR OLD FEBRUARY 11 | MIAMI, FLORIDA | FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY ashlyn juniper. she picks at invisible dirt underneath her perfectly-manicured nails and flips through a book of clothing designs while her sister lights the single candle in the center of a chocolate cake that the barely-one-year-old girl won't be able to eat. her daughter giggles innocently from her high chair; her half-aunt, half-nanny places the cake in front of her and blows out the candle for her. ashlyn snaps a few pictures that she won't develop for a month and a half and dials the number of the hotel where her husband is staying while her sister cuts the cake. kyle juniper. he answers on the fourth and final ring. scotland is beautiful, he knows, but he wishes ashlyn had come along. she flew from new york to miami for their daughter's first birthday and it isn't even the baby's birthday here anymore. his sister-in-law called him a few days ago, trying to talk him into ditching the movie shoot for analiese's first cake-cutting, but he's busy filming what promises to be the biggest blockbuster of the year. ashlyn holds the phone to his daughter's ear and he sings happy birthday to her from four thousand miles away. taryn jacobson. her sister disappears after she finishes her miniature slice of birthday cake. taryn gets ana ready for bed and sings to her before turning the lights out; she's getting good at it, with all the practice she's had. it's been exactly eleven months and two weeks since she dropped out of high school, and eleven months on the dot since her sister and brother-in-law offered her a job as their daughter's nanny. analiese curls up in her crib with the teddy bear that taryn bought her and mumbles something that sounds frighteningly like mama. FIVE YEARS OLD SEPTEMBER 6 | MIAMI, FLORIDA | FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL taryn jacobson. she tries to hold ana's hand as they cross the parking lot, but the girl is five now and pulls away from her after the first three steps. her purple skirt flies around her as she skips ahead, blonde curls bouncing. ashlyn is in new york, overseeing the preparations for her next fashion show. kyle is home, but too jet-lagged from the worldwide promo tour for his newest film to take his daughter to her first day of kindergarten. heather garrison. at first, she's startled by how young the girl's mother is. it isn't until she checks of analiese juniper's name on her attendance list that she understands; her daughter, who's just graduated from high school and probably would have graduated with analiese's aunt, is always talking about ashlyn juniper's designs, and she would have to be living under a rock to not know who kyle juniper is. as far as heather can tell, nannies aren't common for miami, but she hardly bats an eye. caroline webb. the first time she talks to analiese juniper, it's to ask for a turn on the rocking horse in the corner of the room. obligingly, the girl climbs off the wooden horse. the second time she talks to analiese juniper, she's sitting down next to the curly-haired blonde, making play dough cupcakes. their friendship is automatic. EIGHT YEARS OLD AUGUST 18 | LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA | FIRST MOVIE SHOOT taryn jacobson. the first thing that she says when she finds out about the movie is that maybe, just maybe, it will bring kyle and his daughter a little closer. it hasn't exactly been a secret for the past several years that analiese and her parents don't see each other much. she mumbles under her breath and rolls her eyes and wonders if, while ana is in los angeles with her father, she might manage to find time to act like a regular twenty-five-year-old. she knows the answer without trying, and it's a no. it's a short jump to wondering how long kyle and ashlyn will attempt to keep it a secret from the world that analiese is adopted. kyle juniper. analiese follows him eagerly into the building, her eyes as wide and bright blue as ever, her blonde curls swinging back and forth as she half-walks, half-skips on his heels. a paparazzi outside snaps a photo that will appear in next week's issue of people. kyle has gotten his daugther a role in his newest movie without even trying; it's a small role, just a couple of scenes, but he's flown her out to los angeles for it and she's been smiling ever since the plane touched down. jason melbourne. he considers it a miracle that the eight-year-old actually knows what she's doing. she's never acted in her life, yet she knows without anyone explaining a thing to her exactly what to do. she sits still for the hair and makeup artists, she stops when jason calls cut, and she does everything that her father tells her to do without even a split second of hesitation. she wants to make him happy; it's easy for jason to see that. even from his director's chair, he can tell that acting like kyle juniper's daughter isn't something that analiese juniper gets to do a lot. NINE YEARS OLD FEBRUARY 17 | LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA | FIRST MOVIE PREMIERE caroline webb. she drags her entire family into the living room and pops four bags of slightly-burnt popcorn in the microwave while her father finds the right channel. the entertainment network doesn't show the entire premiere, but carrie sees snippets of her best friend seven times throughout the half hour that she's allowed to watch for before bedtime. kyle juniper. this movie premiere is only different from all the other ones that he's been to because of analiese. they go as a family; ashlyn is his date, of course, and ana's is her aunt because she's still only nine and any other date is completely out of the question. kyle puts his right arm around his wife and reaches out with his left hand for his daughter's hand, but she's too preoccupied with holding onto taryn. taryn jacobson. the press swarms around them with their cameras and microphones moments after they step onto the red carpet and asks everyone but her a thousand questions. taryn tugs self-consciously at the hem of her dress and tries to look less uncomfortable than she feels. red carpets are no place for high school dropouts. she doesn't belong here. analiese grips her fingers tightly with both of her small hands and refuses to let her walk away. ELEVEN YEARS OLD DECEMBER 25 | MIAMI, FLORIDA | FIRST GUITAR kyle juniper. his movie shoot is put on hold for a few days on either side of christmas and kyle is on the first flight from vancouver to miami, mostly because his sister-in-law booked his ticket for him. he thinks privately that he would have liked to have a night to rest before the flight. ashlyn juniper. nearly a year ago, when analiese's eleventh birthday was approaching and her interest became music, ashlyn laughed and said that it would last about as long as her brief foray into acting. but it's christmas and for one of analiese's presents, she buys a second-generation ipod. her sister's gift overshadows the music player with ease. taryn jacobson. she leans forward where she sits on the couch across from the christmas tree while analiese rips the wrapping paper off the present, growing more excited with each shred of red-and-green stripes that she pulls away. when the acoustic guitar's shining wood is finally revealed, the girl screams. she overlooks the laptop, the playstation, and the ipod from her parents and spends seven and a half hours trying to teach herself how to play while taryn sits in the kitchen with her sister and convinces her to find her daughter a guitar teacher. TWELVE YEARS OLD MARCH 19 | NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE | FIRST DEMO CD caroline webb. she stays at ana's house for spring break and sits quietly while her friend's aunt helps her record herself singing shania twain karaoke and a few admittedly not-very-great original songs. together, they burn them onto what seems like five hundred blank cd's. carefully, they write analiese juniper: demo on every single one with a thick black sharpie. the next day, they're driving to nashville, the back seat filled with cd cases, windows down, singing along to the radio. taryn jacobson. she spends thirteen hours cooped up in her car with analiese and her best friend on the way to nashville, tennessee, and by the time they finally get there, all she wants to do is sleep. but she drives her niece to every label record she can find and waits in the car with carrie while ana runs inside to give out copies of her demo. they run out of places to go long before running out of cd's. gabrielle ramsay. she leaves the record label's office with a cd in her purse that she doesn't remember is there. somehow, she managed to sweep it into her bag with all the paperwork on her desk, and she doesn't uncover the cd for several days. she pictures the kid that handed it to her and, thinking of the hopeful smile on the girl's face, puts it in her stereo. THIRTEEN YEARS OLD DECEMBER 1 | MIAMI, FLORIDA | FIRST BREAK-UP ashlyn juniper. she doesn't hear a word from miami on the first night of december. she stays at the office in manhattan until the early hours of the morning, perfecting a couple of last-minute designs for her spring line. bryan halstoff. he breaks up with analiese juniper twenty-seven days after their first date because he's bored. it's an eighth-grade relationship and he was barely even interested for any reason other than because she's pretty and sings and has famous parents. but the only family he's met is her aunt, who just tells him when to have her home by and tries to take pictures before they go to see movies, and it's not all that exciting. so he ends it. taryn jacobson. when bryan dumps ana less than a month into their almost-meaningless relationship, and the day after she finds out that her best friend is moving, she's there with ice cream, cheesy movies, and kleenex. it's around the time that she's getting up to put in a new movie that she realizes just how similar to her the girl is. analiese falls in love too fast, too hard. she puts too much into everything, the way that taryn does. SIXTEEN YEARS OLD FEBRUARY 11 | MIAMI, FLORIDA | FIRST TRUTH REVEALED kyle juniper. he's not exactly sure why analiese doesn't seem more surprised when the truth comes out. she doesn't cry, she doesn't throw things, she doesn't yell at him or his wife for hiding the fact that she's adopted for sixteen full years. she barely even frowns. taryn jacobson. she doesn't even flinch when kyle and ashlyn drop the news like a wayward bomb. they do it without any tact, far too casually, while taryn is lighting the sixteenth candle on analiese's birthday cake. later that night, she knocks softly on the girl's door and tries to gauge just how shaken she is, but she can't tell. either ana is hiding it extremely well, or she doesn't feel betrayed at all. arielle o'malley. the way she does every february eleventh, she pulls the covers up to her chin all the way across the country in seattle, washington and watches all three of analiese juniper's movies. she fast-forwards through the scenes she's seen a hundred times and stops just in time to see her daughter deliver each line. she pulls up the girl's youtube channel and watches every cover and original song she's ever posted in chronological order. it's all too easy to keep track of the baby she gave up when the couple who took her in are world-famous. EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD JUNE 21 | MIAMI, FLORIDA | FIRST GRADUATION caroline webb. all the way up the coast, she walks across the stage in brunswick, maine to get her diploma. somewhere south of her, she knows, her old best friend is doing the exact same thing. ashlyn juniper. she cheers along with everyone else when the graduating class of 2009 is announced. when analiese finds them in the crowd and hugs her sister before anyone else, ashlyn only reaches out absently to adjust the way that her adopted daughter's robe hangs. she holds her husband's hand and smiles, mostly because that's what all the other parents are doing. it occurs to her then that she doesn't really know how to be a parent. taryn jacobson. she puts it off for as long as possible, but by the time that the rest of analiese's graduating class have almost all left and it's just taryn, her sister and her brother-in-law hovering around the girl, she can't wait any longer. she doesn't quite meet ana's eyes when she tells her that she's leaving, and she tries not to pay attention to the expression on the girl's face when she leaves for the airport the next morning. NINETEEN YEARS OLD SEPTEMBER 2 | BRUNSWICK, MAINE | FIRST MOVE-IN isaac hoffman. it's impossible to deny that the new girl is good. she only wants to dj for the radio station part time while she goes to university, but he thinks that analiese juniper makes an excellent addition to the team. most of her classes end by mid-afternoon and he watches, pleased, as she eagerly takes on the five o'clock traffic jam. besides that, he likes listening to her sing during commercial breaks. mark sheldon. the nineteen-year-old shows up on his doorstep at the beginning of september with three suitcases, her taxi pulling away even as he opens the door, claiming to know the people who are renting out his basement suite. he half-closes the door on her but she's pushy and insists upon at least seeing the brother and sister who live downstairs. he tries to tell them that three is a crowd for the little basement, but they find a way to make it work before he can even blink. caroline webb. she's just gotten home from work when analiese shows up. they haven't seen each other since midway through the eighth grade and it's awkward at first, but before long, the two of them are best friends again. they tell each other everything that they've missed and, much to her older brother's half-mock dismay, ana moves in. BEHIND THE MASK RACHEL | 18 | GMT -8 | STEPH LINKED ME | TRISTAN & PERSEPHONE really, it was just her luck that she knocked over all the paints on her desk just two minutes before the final bell. personally, analiese kyla juniper would much rather go back to the large, empty house a twenty-minute walk away from the school than clean up paint. her mom was off in france for some kind of fashion event that she hadn't really cared to listen to the details about, and her father was shooting his next big hit in australia. ana didn't mind being left home alone, exactly, but she would have liked it a little more if her aunt taryn was still living with them. she'd been ana's live-in nanny since the first few months of her life, up until analiese had been deemed too old for a nanny after finishing junior year. really, taryn had been more like a mother (and a sister and a best friend, basically everything she could need, all rolled up into one) and she hadn't come back to visit much over the past several months, given that she'd gotten a new job as a full-time nanny on the outskirts of the city. however much analiese wanted to evacuate the school as quickly as possible when the bell rang, officially dismissing the students of worthington prep from its clutches, she ducked down behind her desk anyway, several damp paper towels in one hand. miss o'malley wouldn't want paint drying all over the linoleum floor overnight, and as oddly quiet and wide-eyed as analiese found the art teacher to be, she didn't want to cause any kind of trouble. it was already obvious enough to her that she was barely scraping by in the class -- apparently, she only had a creative ear, with no hint of a creative eye. the classroom emptied quickly, and analiese was left crouching on the floor next to her desk, supporting herself with one hand and wiping up paint with the other. it was barely thirty seconds after the bell before she was left alone with the art teacher. |
