LOCATION | Located in Cumberland County, Maine near Portland and the state's capital, Augusta, which is only forty miles Northeast.
EARLY HISTORY | Settled originally by fisherman Thomas Purchase, Brunswick (then called Pejepscot) was placed under the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1639. Brunswick was officially established as a town in 1717, named after the House of Brunswick, but a group of Abenakis indians burned the town to the ground for the second time in history. The town wasn't reestablished as a town until 1739, later becoming a successful seaport and home for Bowdoin College. When Maine separated from Massachusetts and became its own state in 1820, Brunswick was a center for textiles and lumber.
